I met Tommy in 7th grade, and he was one of my closest friends for the next several years. In addition to getting into lots of trouble of various teenage kinds, we were both in U S Naval Sea Cadets, went to boot camp and to sea together, and spent a weekend each month at NAS Dallas, the naval base in town. We stayed in touch for a few years after high school, lost touch for many years, & then reconnected about 20 years ago & stayed in contact with each other after that.
Although our lives were different in some ways, they were very similar in others, & Tommy & I saw eye to eye on nearly everything, from the girls we liked in junior high to the politics we endorsed in recent years. He was as honest a soul as ever I knew, and a true friend to the end. I never heard him utter an unkind word, except in someone else's defense.
Rest in peace, Tommy. I do believe we'll meet again.
